William McGuffey Mentor to American Industry

William McGuffey Mentor to American Industry

By: Quentin R. Skrabec, Jr.

McGuffey Readers dominated American education from the 1840s into the 1900s; even today there is a revival of their use among home schoolers. McGuffey jingles such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” and “Where there’s a will, there’s a way” remain in the vernacular even today. McGuffey Readers were best sellers only surpassed inAmerica by the Bible and Webster’s Dictionary. In 2008, the McGuffey Eclectic Reader was ranked with Thomas Paine’s Common Sense and Alexander Hamilton’s The Federalist as “books that changed the course ofU.S. history.” Published originally in the early 1830s, by 1900 over one hundred fifty million had been sold. Even today, sales average about thirty thousand a year. Amazingly, for all the sales, William Holmes McGuffey earned a mere one thousand dollars and a small payment for revisions! The publishers fared much better, creating ten millionaires. At the peak, thirty-seven states adopted the McGuffey Readers. [download]
